Deer in Velvet and Deer in Rut
Anticosti bucks, for the most part, keep their velvet until mid-September. After that, their antlers begin hardening in preparation for the rut wich will occur in November. Building fat reserves for the long winter months becomes a priority for Anticosti bucks. They will reach their maximum weight just before the rut occurs.
November is a very exhausting time period for them. When the rut is over, they will have lost, on average, one sixth of their body weight. ( along with losing their heads for a couple of weeks)... I can't help wondering how bad the chaos would be if human sexuality was limited to the month of November on the whole planet!
