Anticosti, marine mammals and capelins.
Several species of marine mammals inhabit the cost of Anticosti, the largest island of the St. Lawrence estuary in Quebec. The common seal, the grey seal, and the Greenland seal are all very abundant. Whales such as the blue whale, the fin whale, the minke whale, and the humpback whale, as well as the killer whale, and harbor porpoise, can frequently be seen along the coast of Anticosti, which provides very rich nutrition for those species. In June, millions of capelins come near the beaches of the island to deposit their eggs. Seals and killer whale come close to the shore to feed on this nourishing resource. One could be the witness of spectacular scenes featuring prey and predators in full action. |
