The deer, emblem of Anticosti Island
Henri Menier was well adviced in the choice of the wild animals that could adapt on Anticosti Island. The whitetail deer became the emblem and a major element of Anticosti Island. The deer owes its survival to its great capacity of adaptation to various types of habitats, the absence of dogs and predators on the island, and to its great resistance, in spite of its fragile appearance. On Anticosti, they feed on mushrooms, branches of leafy trees, herbaceous protein rich plants, hemlock trees, and lichen which grows on the branches of spruce and hemlock trees. The sea weed washed ashore by the sea provides a good source of food to them, especialy during the harsh Anticosti winter.
