WILDLIFE OF ANTICOSTI ISLAND

The king of the wildlife on Anticosti Island is the whitetail deer which owes its presence on Anticosti to a visionary man named of Henri Menier, who, between 1896 and 1897, introduced approximately 250 deer. Menier also introduced moose, rabbit, beaver, partridge and the leopard frog. Thousand of red foxes, both silver and cross patterned, also are common on Anticosti. Some 217 species of birds, including the bald eagle are present also. The grey seal, common seal, Greenland seal, as well as the killer whale and boreal finback whale, swim together in the waters off the coasts of Anticosti.
